Athanasios Orphanides has been a Senior Fellow at CFS since June 2012. Prior to that he was a CFS Fellow in the research area “Monetary Policy and Financial Markets” for about ten years. As Senior Fellow he is actively involved in both the research activities of the CFS, as well as in policy debates regarding monetary policy and financial stability, through the\u00a0SAFE Policy Center<\/a>. He has also been actively involved in high-level academic and policy conferences.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Orphanides\u00a0is Professor of the Practice of Global Economics and Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He served a five-year term as Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus from May 2007 to May 2012.\u00a0<\/span>As Governor he oversaw the introduction of the euro in Cyprus and subsequently served as a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank between January 2008 and May 2012. Following the creation of the European Systemic Risk Board in 2010, he was elected a member of its inaugural Steering Committee.<\/p>\n

Prior to his appointment as Governor, Orphanides served as Senior Adviser at the Federal Reserve Board in the USA, where he had started his professional career as an economist in 1990. While at the Federal Reserve he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in macroeconomics and monetary economics at Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n
