‘German Banks and the Challenges of Globalization’

This talk considers the history of Germany’s two largest banks in the context of the U-shaped development of globalization over the last 150 years. The model of the universal bank was born at a time when Germany was the pioneer of a new type of globalization. It was destroyed by the combination of the First World War and the Great Depression. In the 1990s and 2000s, Germany’s large banks tried to be global players again, but the result was a sad and painful failure.
