CFS Online Lecture
16.10.2024 | 17.30 - 18.30 Uhr
European trade dependencies, the technology frontier and the Capital Markets Union
In this lecture, we’ll explore the benefits Europe has reaped from global trade and the interdependencies it has forged with China and the United States over the past 30 years. We’ll discuss the main reasons for Europe’s recent loss of global market shares and the risk of higher trade tariffs. Restoring Europe’s export competitiveness calls for avoiding the so-called “middle technology trap”, and, in terms of financing, more efficient use of the ample European savings. Hence the need to move forward on the capital markets union agenda, since Europe does not have the same fiscal policy space as the United States.
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Rainer Klump, Director CFS and Goethe University
